Natal Astrology

First off, I want to apologize for not posting this yesterday. If you were looking forward to learning how to read natal charts, I’m afraid it will be postponed until tomorrow.

In this installment, I will discuss the Houses of natal astrology. For purposes of simplicity, I will focus on Placidus style Houses. There are numerous ways to calculate the Houses and the preferred method can vary from astrologer to astrologer. I am most familiar (and therefore most comfortable) with the Placidus system. This style is typically used most often in the West.

The Placidus system is largely based on the time of an event - in this case, a person’s birth. Therefore, it is important to have accurate time in order to calculate the most accurate Houses in a natal chart. The 1st House - The House of Self *Angular-the ascendant/rising* - the natural home of Aries; personal appearance, character, ability, the self

The 2nd House - The House of Value - the natural home of Taurus; finance, movable, property, peace, liberty, emotions

The 3rd House - The House of Communications - the natural home of Gemini; relations, education, studies, literature, the nervous system, short journeys

The 4th House - The House of Home and Family *Angular Nadir* - the natural home of Cancer; the home, inherited tendencies, the end of life, the father

The 5th House - The House of Pleasure - the natural home of Leo; pleasure, love affairs, children, speculation, amusements

The 6th House - The House of Health - the natural home of Virgo, domesticity, servants and inferiors, health, healing and nursing

The 7th House - The House of Partnerships *Angular descendant* - the natural home of Libra; marriage, partnerships and associations, communal life, open enemies, lawsuits

The 8th House - The House of Death and Sex - the natural home of Scorpio; death and everything connected with it; inheritance and legacies

The 9th House - The House of Philosophy - the natural home of Sagittarius; science, philosophy, religion, education, long voyages, dreams and visions

The 10th House - The House of Social Status *Angular mid-heaven* - the natural home of Capricorn; the profession, honor, fame and renown, the mother

The 11th House - The House of Friendships - the natural home of Aquarius; friends, hopes and wishes

The 12th House - The House of Self-Undoing - the natural home of Pisces; trial, restriction, fear, sorrow, secret enemies, prisons, lunatic asylums

The Angular Houses - the 1st, 4th, 7th and 10th Houses - are the Houses of the Cardinal signs and represent action. The cusp of the 1st House is the Ascendant (AC), the cusp of the 4th House is the Nadir or Imum Coeli (IC), the cusp of the 7th House is the Descendant (DC) and the cusp of the 10th House is the Mid-Heaven (MC).
